TP Baier/Herz: Plasticity of place and space coding in the zebrafish brain

"We aim at extending the investigation of spatial navigation to the zebrafish system, a powerful model system to study neural substrates of elementary cognitive abilities. Zebrafish provide easy microscopic access to the brain, have simpler brain structure than rodents and yet possess a broad repertoire of robust spatial behaviors. We therefore hope to find conserved biological principles for the accumulation, integration and storage of sensory information used for navigation.
- In the first part of the project we are establishing a novel experimental paradigm for studying navigational behavior in zebrafish.
- In the second part of the project we aim at studying cellular basis of navigational behavior using two-photon microscopy."
